BS Cardiovascular Technology

The BS Cardiovascular Technology program aims to prepare competent cardiovascular technologists equipped with sound theoretical knowledge, advanced technical skills, clinical competencies, research capabilities, and professional ethics to support diagnostic and interventional cardiology services. The program emphasizes safe, patient-centered, and evidence-based cardiovascular care, effective inter-professional collaboration, and lifelong learning to enable graduates to contribute effectively to multidisciplinary healthcare teams and the advancement of cardiovascular healthcare.

Dow Institute of Cardiology

The evolution of a modern cardiology in Pakistan reflects a broader commitment to accessible, high-quality healthcare. Within this landscape, the Dow Institute of Cardiology (DIC), a constitute institute of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), has emerged as a dynamic and rapidly advancing center of excellence. Since its inauguration in January 2016, DIC has not only expanded the scope of cardiac services in the public sector but has also set new benchmarks in clinical care, academic training, and technological innovation.

Foundation and Vision

The establishment of DIC was rooted in the broader vision of DUHS: to create a pre-eminent healthcare institution capable of transforming and saving lives. From its inception, the institute was designed to address the growing burden of cardiovascular disease in Pakistan—an epidemiological challenge requiring both preventive strategies and advanced interventional care.
Positioned as the third largest public cardiac center in the city of Karachi, DIC was envisioned as a comprehensive facility capable of delivering end-to-end cardiac care, spanning prevention, early diagnosis, acute intervention and long-term management.

Rapid Growth and Public Trust

In a remarkably short span of time, DIC gained widespread recognition and trust among the public. This rapid acceptance was not incidental—it was built upon consistent delivery of timely, effective, and patient-centered care.
The institute’s accessibility and affordability played a pivotal role in its popularity. In a healthcare environment where advanced cardiac procedures are often financially prohibitive, DIC positioned itself as a center that balances clinical excellence with economic feasibility, thereby widening access to life-saving treatments.

Comprehensive Clinical Services

A defining feature of DIC is its commitment to providing a continuum of cardiac care, from prevention to intervention.
Interventional Cardiology Services
DIC offers both elective and primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) services on a 24/7 basis. This round-the-clock availability is particularly critical in the management of acute coronary syndromes, where timely reperfusion significantly reduces morbidity and mortality.
The establishment of state-of-the-art Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) services further strengthens its capacity to manage critically il patients, ensuring continuous monitoring and advanced hemodynamic support.

Device Therapy Expansion
In 2020, the institute expanded its services to include pacemaker implantation and advanced device therapies. This development marked a significant milestone, enabling the management of complex arrhythmias and heart failure conditions within the same facility.

Academic Excellence and Professional Training
Beyond clinical services, DIC has distinguished itself as a center of academic excellence. Within just three years of its inauguration, the institute achieved accreditation from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan for FCPS Cardiology training—a testament to its high standards in education and clinical practice. Recognizing the evolving demands of cardiology, CPSP further granted accreditation for
a second fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, acknowledging the institute’s capability to train specialists in advanced procedures.
In alignment with its academic mission, DIC launched the BS Cardiovascular Technology program in 2024, aimed at developing a skilled workforce proficient in modern diagnostic and interventional techniques. This initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to healthcare education, ensuring sustainability and continuous improvement in service delivery.

Technological Advancement: Cardiac CT Services
In 2025, DIC introduced Cardiac CT services, marking another leap forward in non-invasive cardiology. Cardiac CT has revolutionized the diagnostic approach to coronary artery disease by providing:
• Rapid and non-invasive assessment of coronary arteries
• Calcium scoring, enabling quantification of atherosclerotic plaque burden
• Detailed evaluation of complex structural heart diseases
This modality offers clinicians a powerful tool for early detection and risk stratification, ultimately improving patient outcomes. Importantly, DIC has ensured that these advanced imaging services remain affordable, reinforcing its commitment to equitable healthcare.
Commitment to Affordability and Accessibility.
At DIC, Cardiac CT services are delivered in a highly patient-friendly and reassuring environment, designed to minimize anxiety while ensuring diagnostic precision. The service is conducted under the supervision of highly qualified cardiologist alongside experienced imaging expert, ensuring meticulous interpretation and clinical integration.

One of the most commendable aspects of DIC’s growth is its unwavering focus on affordable care. By maintaining cost-effective service delivery without compromising quality, the institute has bridged a critical gap in Pakistan’s healthcare system.

This approach not only enhances patient access but also promotes early diagnosis and timely intervention—key factors in reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease.

A Model for the Future
The journey of the Dow Institute of Cardiology exemplifies how strategic vision, institutional commitment, and clinical excellence can converge to create a transformative healthcare model.
From its inauguration in 2016 to its current status as a rapidly growing center of excellence, DIC has:
• Established comprehensive cardiac services
• Achieved prestigious academic accreditations
• Integrated advanced technologies
• Maintained affordability for the general population
In less than a decade, the Dow Institute of Cardiology has carved a distinct identity within Pakistan’s healthcare system. Its success lies not only in numbers or infrastructure but in its holistic approach to cardiac care—spanning prevention, diagnosis, intervention, and education.
Guided by the vision of Dow University of Health Sciences, the institute continues to move toward becoming a pre-eminent center of cardiology, dedicated to changing and saving lives. As cardiovascular disease continues to pose a major public health challenge, institutions like DIC offer a compelling blueprint for the future-where excellence, accessibility, and innovation coexist seamlessly.

A blood pressure monitor is used to measure and record your blood pressure over 24 hours during your normal daily routine. It can be used to diagnose conditions such as high blood pressure (hypertension).

It is sometimes used to diagnose a condition called white coat hypertension, which is when high blood pressure readings are caused by being in a clinical environment, such as a doctor’s surgery or a hospital.

It can also be used to assess the use of medication for blood pressure control.

The Holter monitor is a type of portable electrocardiogram (ECG). It records the electrical activity of the heart continuously over 24 hours or longer while you are away from the doctor’s office. A standard or “resting” ECG is one of the simplest and fastest tests used to evaluate the heart. Electrodes (small, plastic patches that stick to the skin) are placed at certain points on the chest and abdomen. The electrodes are connected to an ECG machine by wires. Then, the electrical activity of the heart can be measured, recorded, and printed. No electricity is sent into the body.
