Dow Institute of Health Professional Education

About DIHPE

Dow Institute of Health Professionals Education (DIHPE) is an entity of DUHS that facilitates teaching, scholarship, development, and evaluation of educational programs through service provision, research, and innovation. The scope of its activities includes undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, continuing professional development, allied and lifelong learning.

In Pakistan, Dow Institute of Health Professionals Education (DIHPE) has the privileged to be the first program dedicated to Health Professional Education (HPE). An idea was developed, and the institute was eventually established for the purpose of reorganizing, enhancing, and optimizing the existing activities for health professional education in the region.

DIHPE focuses on four pillars of medical education: teaching and learning, principles of assessment, curriculum development and innovation, and research in HPE. Furthermore, we supervise the delivery of a variety of Faculty Development and Professional skills courses ranging from one-day to five-day, as well as up to three-month exploratory courses, which are required of all MPhil and PhD trainees at Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS).

Prof. Sonia Ijaz Haider

Welcome to the Dow Institute of Health Professions Education (DIHPE), Dow University of Health Sciences.

Health professions education is fundamental to the quality of healthcare. The knowledge, values, and capabilities of future healthcare professionals are shaped not only by what we teach, but also by how we design learning, assess competence, support professional development, and create environments in which learners and educators can thrive.

Since establishing Pakistan’s first postgraduate programme in Health Professions Education in 2009, DIHPE has played a pioneering role in developing educators, scholars, researchers, and academic leaders. Today, our Certificate, Master’s, and PhD programs provide a progressive academic pathway—from strengthening foundational teaching capabilities to developing educational leadership and generating original research that advances the field.

At DIHPE, we view education as a powerful means of transformation. Our programs integrate educational theory with professional practice and promote critical thinking, reflective learning, scholarly inquiry, collaboration, and ethical leadership. We remain responsive to contemporary developments in competency-based education, curriculum and assessment reform, digital learning, artificial intelligence, learner well-being, and institutional quality improvement.

Our commitment extends beyond formal academic programs. Through faculty development, educational research, academic consultation, and institutional collaboration, we support the continuous improvement of teaching and learning across DUHS and the wider health professions education community.

We take pride in our growing network of graduates who contribute as educators, curriculum developers, assessment specialists, researchers, and academic leaders in Pakistan and internationally. Their work reflects our enduring purpose: to strengthen educational practice, advance scholarship, and contribute ultimately to better healthcare.

I invite you to explore our programs and join a scholarly community committed to shaping the future of health professions education through excellence, innovation, and meaningful educational change.
