Taking breast cancer awareness to the rural areas of Sujawal, the Department of Surgical Oncology, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), led by Dr. Omema Saleem, joined hands with the School of Public Health, DUHS, to hold a public breast cancer awareness camp in Jati, District Sujawal, on 22 October 2026, under the theme, “Extending Care Beyond Walls: Early Detection Saves Lives.”
The camp was held at the Dow Community Centre for Health and Social Wellbeing in Jati, run by the School of Public Health, DUHS. It opened with an educational session for community members and frontline healthcare providers. Speakers used the local language to address common myths about breast cancer and to explain its early warning signs. They then demonstrated breast self-examination step by step and asked participants to share these skills with women in their families and neighborhoods.
After the session, the Surgical Oncology team gave clinical breast examinations and one-to-one counselling to around 75 women. Each woman was told which signs and symptoms to watch for and where she could go for screening, investigations and treatment, from primary care facilities up to specialised oncology services.
Mr. Ghulam Qadir Nohrio, Assistant Commissioner Jati, visited the centre during the camp and expressed his support for the initiative.
Such outreach brings specialist care to rural communities and helps more women get diagnosed early, when breast cancer is most treatable.
