THE IMPACT OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: TO HEAR WHAT ISN’T BEING SAID

In this session, we had the privilege of engaging participants in an innovative leadership program which was focused on the topic of EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION. This is part of the Mastering the Art of Effective Leadership engagement series offered under the aegis of the Emerging Leadership Academy, Dow University of Health Sciences

In this colloquy, we examined the importance of human (soft) vs. technical (hard) skills and its critical influence on defining the ultimate personal and professional success. The role of communication as a critical element of human skill was contemplated and various elements of verbal and nonverbal interactions were contested. The participants partook in a Telephone game with very interesting outcome underscoring the attenuation and contortion of message as it travels down the human chain.

The participants conversed about the influential work of Daniel Kahneman (Nobel Laureate 2002) and his Dual-Process Theory. The fact that most human interactions do not proceed beyond Intuitive (System 1) Thinking leading to flawed judgment and miscommunication with unfavorable outcome was also discussed.

The session ended with a treatise about inter generational communication and a structured mock interview session between a potential applicant and a recruiter.
