Glycemic control in type-2 diabetes mellitus patients through non-surgical periodontal therapy – a randomized controlled trial was conducted over a period of three years (2019 – 2021). This project involved the screening phase where adult population were screened for type-2 diabetes having periodontal problems followed by a trial phase where the selected individuals were randomized in two tests and a control group. The test groups were intervened with the scaling with root planning covered by an antibiotic, and other alone with scaling and root planning. It was learnt that non-surgical periodontal therapy in the form of scaling and root planning helps achieve glycemic control as indicated by HbA1c levels after three and six months.
This project was a joint venture by the Department of Community Dentistry, Periodontology, National Institute of Diabetes & Endocrinology (NICE) and Dow Diagnostic Lab (DDRL) under the umbrella of Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi. This was the only project from Low-Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) particularly from Pakistan that was cited by the Cochrane Oral Health Group – UK. The NICE- UK guidelines for diabase management were updated after informed by the Cochrane Review.
