The Dow International Medical College,an institute par excellence and one of its own kind in the public sector in Pakistan was established three years ago.
The need for a new medical college was recognized by the management of the Dow University Of Health Sciences in view of the problems faced by overseas Pakistanis in providing professional education to their children especially after 9/11 and 7/7.It was realized that not only will it be cost effective, but it will also help in reducing the continuous brain drain and bring foreign exchange to the country.
For the establishment of this college a presentation was made to His Excellency The Governor Of Sindh Dr Ishrat ul Ibad Khan who is also the Chancellor of the University on 15th September 2005 at the Governor House Karachi. This meeting was convened at the behest of the Vice Chancellor Professor Masood Hameed Khan who led a task force which comprised of various professors and doctors from DUHS to brief the Chancellor.
The college was a part of a MEGA PROJECT worth rupees four hundred and eighty six million approved by the HEC.It initially started in two buildings occupied by the EPI and Women’s Health Projects of the Government of Sindh at the site of the Ojha Institute Of Chest Diseases. The construction of the new building started in 2006 and was completed in 2009,specially designed and having a covered area of 175000 sqft, equipped with the most modern technology.
The associated hospital which initially comprised of 350 beds has been upgraded into a 500 bed, state of the art hospital with the latest equipment.
