A Report on 3rd All Pakistan DUHS-DICE Health Innovation Exhibition 2017

Introduction:

After accomplishment of two successful exhibitions in the year 2015 and 2016, Dow University of Health Sciences in collaboration with DICE Foundation, USA, created another success story by organizing The 3rd All Pakistan DUHS-DICE Health Innovation exhibition held on 23rd of December 2017, at DUHS OJHA Campus Karachi. As we know that the idea of the event is to bring innovative concepts and new inventions in Health industry as well as to motivate academia, entrepreneurs, expatriates and government to promote this platform and to create a positive and promising image of Pakistan health industry in the eyes of global community.

 

The Event:

The event was inaugurated by the honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammaed Saeed Quraishy along with the Chairman DICE Foundation USA, Dr. Khurshid Qureshi (with their core DICE team) Pro-Vice Chancellor, Chairman DUHS DICE Pakistan Prof. Khawar Saeed Jamali and Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Masroor. Mr. Javed Memon (Regional Director HEC) was the guest of honor who honored the event by his presence.

More than twenty (20) reputable universities across Pakistan participated in this mega event in which NED University, NUST Islamabad, Sir Syed University, University of Karachi, Hamdard University, NUR International University, Ziauddin University, and many others were showcasing around 70 health innovative projects. Besides that there were 15 Nutrition projects as well which were presented by Kinnaird College for women and from Nutrition Department of DUHS.

After going through keen and unbiased evaluation process, honorable judges selected three (03) top projects which were awarded with cash prizes and trophies. The 3rd prize of Rs. 40k was given to M.U.H.A.F.I.Z. (Military Uniform for Health Analytic military) introduced by Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology. The runner up was awarded Rs. 60k for showcasing “A Functional Walking Pattern Analysis System to Detect Abnormalities” propounded by Hamdard University. Above all, the most innovative idea which stands 1st in the queue, was “Design and Development of Physiotherapy Device for Knee Joint and Associated Muscles Rehabilitation” presented by National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) Islamabad was awarded cash of Rs. 100k.

Following the top three, ten (10) projects were awarded special prize of Rs. 10k each, being quite innovative and efficacious. To be precise,

  • NASR Walking Assistive Device for Elderly People by University of Karachi.
  • Brain Controlled Intellectual Wheel Chair by Jinnah University for women.
  • Pakistan’s first indigenously developed probiotic – a step forward to knowledge based bio economy by Bio-Technology department DUHS.
  • Modified Writing Aids by Dow Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
  • Simultaneous effect of leflunomide in carrageenan induced acute arthritic model.
  • Production of Cellulose a multitasked enzyme by using bagasse, an industrial waste by Dow College of Bio Technology.
  • Intravenous Arm by NEDUET.
  • Microbots by Shah Abdul Latif University of Khairpur.
  • Application of Bamboo in medical textile.
  • Detection of loss of knee extension during loading phase by using strain in gauge electro goniometer.

 

DICE SHARK Session:

DICE Shark session is basically a pitching session where students from different universities present their health innovative projects to industrialists (from health and related sectors) who aspire to sponsor their projects to make them commercial ready.

There were 8 projects pitched this category in which following ideas were presented.

  • Skin wound Infection treatment via Topical ointment from Natural Honey pitched by Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology,
  • Brood Helmet by Institute of Health Management, DUHS.
  • Design and Development of a Noninvasive Glucometer by Hamdard University.
  • Tell me (An AI Assistant for the Visually Challenged) by Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology.
  • Computer Mouse Actions Control with Eye Movement by Hamdard University.
  • Virtual Therapist by Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology.
The most innovative ideas were funded with rupees one to two Lacs by the industrialists.

 

National Innovation Basket Session (NIB):

Besides the routine activities of the event, this year DICE Foundation has introduced a new edifying segment (NIB). People from academia and health industry joined together in a brain storming session and discussed the SWOT analysis on 5 major modes of health industry medical devices, alternative medicine, health care, pharmaceuticals & Nutrition. The outcomes of this session were noteworthy as each expert has momentarily expounded the fences and prospects of their specific field.

As the event headed towards the closing session, Chairman DICE Foundation, USA, Dr. Khurshid Qureshi and VICE Chancellor DUHS, Dr. Muhammed Saeed Quraishy awarded the participants, organizers and sponsors with certificates and shields for their indefatigable efforts in their respective areas.

The event was successfully completed with the closing speeches of Dr. Sohail Hassan (Chairman DICE Health USA), Dr. Adil Jamal Akhtar (Director DICE Health USA), and Dr. Saad Ellahi (Chairman DICE Automotive) who concluded all the sessions in detail.
